Meet the ASI Team - Craig Gentry

Craig Gentry

Craig is a highly experienced freediving professional and one of the most experienced instructors in the United States. Craig is one of Performance Freediving International's earliest instructors, a former President of USA Freediving, a U.S. National Freediving Champion, and two time Captain of the U.S. National Freediving Team.

Since 2007, Craig has provided specialized training to various organizations and clients such as DARPA, NOAA, aquatic military units, professional big-wave surfers, outrigger canoe teams, and the America's Cup Sailing Team (Team Oracle/Red Bull), among many others.

Craig’s interest in freediving started when he was a teenager after watching a film titled 'The Big Blue. The movie was loosely based on the lives of two competitive freedivers, an Italian and Frenchman. Craig was living in Italy at the time and didn't realize how much the movie would influence the direction of his life.

In 2005 Craig moved to the Bahamas, met an Italian freediver, bought a small boat and focused on the technical and performance aspects of freediving. Shortly after moving to the Bahamas Craig attended Performance Freediving International's Intermediate Level (Level 2) freediving course in Miami, Florida taught by world renowned competitive freediving coach and educator Kirk Krack. A few months later Craig assisted the Performance Freediving International Team in the Cayman Islands with organizational support for AIDA world record attempts in freediving depth disciplines. Inspired, Craig entered his first AIDA sanctioned depth competition in Grand Cayman a month later.

Craig continued his depth training at home in the Bahamas and South Florida. While doing so he sustained serious injuries to both ears that limited his ability to freedive deep for nearly a year. Craig entered is second AIDA competition, attending the U.S. National Freediving Championships in Hawaii in 2006, won, and became the U.S. National Freediving Champion.

Craig went on to Captain two AIDA U.S. National Freediving Teams in Egypt in 2006 and 2008 competing in the AIDA World Freediving Championships.

Having been seriously injured as an athlete has helped Craig as a Performance Freediving International instructor and a high-performance coach with adopting conservative approaches to various freedive training methods in an effort to mitigate the risk of injuries.

Unfortunately injuries in freediving have become an all too common occurrence when new freedivers apply advanced training techniques without proper education, time, adaptation, or understanding of the risks. This problem underscores the importance of proper education and training from professional freediving instructors with years of experience.

Additionally, Craig served as President of USA Freediving for a term after serving on its executive board of directors.

Craig's goals for freediving are the same now as they were when he served as USA Freediving's President, to promote the safe advancement of the sport of freediving, to help responsibly grow the freediving community, and to create training opportunities for freedivers interested in exploring their full potential with proper education, and safety systems in place.

In 2007 Craig was invited to join Performance Freediving International's training team as one of three staff instructors. Over the years Craig contributed to Performance Freediving International's course development, structure, content, and manuals.

Craig regularly offers blue water line diving charters off of Oahu for those with a desire to compete or to simply connect with the ocean on a 'deeper' level.

An accomplished ocean photographer and videographer, Craig uses images of the ocean's wonders to help preserve its health and beauty for future generations.

Craig studied Multimedia Cinematic Production at Hawaii Pacific University in Honolulu, Hawaii.
